Organic Lifestyles: Healthy Eating, Lounging, and Cleaning

Your health should be a top priority in your life, and good health can be linked to all sorts of things—nutritious food, adequate exercise, emotional well being, and even what you’re sleeping on.

The word “organic” is an important one to keep in mind when transitioning over to a healthier lifestyle. We’ve already discussed why you should sleep organic, but what changes can you make during the daytime?

It’s important to look at what you’re consuming and touching on a regular basis. Pushing away thoughts of pesticides and other chemicals that are unfortunately found in our everyday foods and household items is easy to do but not exactly beneficial.

Here are some healthy tips that can steer you in the right direction.

Eat Organic & Support Local Farmers

This is probably one of the most obvious changes you can make in your life. However, it can also be one of the most daunting ones since sometimes the organic prices at the grocery store are pretty steep.

Vani Hari, known to her readers as Food Babe, offers some great advice to help you get started. She discusses the benefits of buying produce locally at the farmers’ market.

Speaking to local farmers about how they grow their vegetables can give you a better understanding of healthy farming practices. You’ll also be strengthening your relationship with the community by making those weekly visits to the market. There are even programs where you can pay a certain amount to receive weekly baskets of produce—that way you’re getting fresh, pesticide-free produce AND supporting a local farmer.

how to shop organic

But okay, you like to go to the grocery store too—understandable. There are so many aisles to explore and different snack foods to try.

Most grocery stores have a separate organic aisle with natural alternatives to your typical sugary desserts or high fructose corn syrup-filled foods. Kale chips, whole wheat chocolate chip cookies, and organic cinnamon cereal are stacked on the shelves but so are those price tags.

It’s important to keep your eye out for coupons and to also stop yourself from over-buying. If you buy too much for your household, you’ll end up wasting food and wasting your money.

Store some of your favorite snack foods and grains in clear glass jars, that way you can truly get a feel for how much food you have in your home. Buy only what you can consume in a reasonable amount of time and if you’re going to buy in bulk, try to freeze what you can so it won’t spoil. This is particularly relevant with organic meats. If you buy only what you need, you’ll save a lot of money and your kitchen won’t be as cluttered—bonus!

Use Natural Household Cleaning Products

A lot of your typical cleaners have toxic chemicals that can irritate your skin and are just an overall unhealthy option for you and your family.

There are several natural cleaning products brands on the market (one of our favorites is Branch Basics). You can use these products for your kitchen countertops, sinks, floors, and more.

Prefer a DIY project that smells fantastic and will get rid of any lingering messes? You can make your own cleaning products and even get your kids to join in for an educational experience where you both learn something new together.

At the end of the day, simply read labels, notice ingredients, and ask yourself the big question: Is this safe to use?

Lounge on Organic Furniture: Sofas & Armchairs

Your typical sofas and chairs are made with synthetic materials that are chemically treated—that doesn’t exactly scream “cozy.” These chemicals attach onto dust particles and as a result, you breathe in these toxins while simply trying to relax with a good book and a cup of tea.

Petroleum-based foam, particle board and toxic glues aren’t safe and yet they are present in countless furniture pieces.

Savvy Rest isn’t a fan which is why we offer organic sofas, loveseats and armchairs. Our organic furniture is safe, durable and sophisticated because we strive for nothing less.

Why Should You Sleep Organic?

We see the word all the time when shopping for fruits and vegetables at the grocery store or at the local farmers’ market. Although a mattress is not a cucumber, the word “organic” carries the same important health standards. This means no pesticides, synthetic ingredients, or harsh chemicals are used in the making (or growing) of a product. For example, our Dunlop latex is certified organic by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Keep reading.
