There are two things that everyone loves: puppies and babies. Right now I’m going to be focusing on the latter even though I could talk about puppies all day.
Babies are cute and absolutely precious. Yes, they may smell sometimes and cry uncontrollably when all you want to do is catch up on sleep from last night’s crying session, but we love them all the same.
We think about what they play with and what they eat. We make sure they are properly secured in their car seat and that their favorite stuffed animal is never too far away. But what about what they sleep on?
It’s easy to think that all crib mattresses are the same. Maybe you think that a more expensive mattress is automatically of better quality and perfectly safe for your child to sleep on. This isn’t always the case.
It’s important to realize that some mattresses contain harsh chemicals and synthetic materials that don’t create a healthy sleep environment. We’re happy to offer organic and safe alternatives.
The Savvy Baby™
The Savvy Baby™ is GOTS-certified organic and perfect for growing infants! It includes an organic cotton and wool casing that is made from only the finest materials. Inside the casing is a solid 5″ layer of Firm Dunlop organic latex so your baby has the support he or she needs. Safety is our number one priority, both in terms of construction and the actual materials used.
We also offer The Savvy Baby™ Talalay crib mattress. It is also GOTS-certified and has the same organic casing as our original crib mattress. The only difference is that we use Firm Talalay latex as the core. Talalay latex is breathable, responsive, but still incredibly supportive.
Our organic mattresses are made without harmful chemical flame retardants. Instead, we use organic wool batting which acts as a natural flame barrier. Breathing in harsh chemicals can lead to all sorts of medical issues, from obesity to cancer. Chemicals in mattresses and furniture attach onto dust particles in your home like magnets. These toxins then float around your home completely undetected.
We believe babies should enter this world on a happy and healthy note, which is why we offer a safe product for them to get some quality zzz’s on. Newborns, infants, and toddlers should be getting anywhere from 11-17 hours of sleep per day. They’re spending a lot of time horizontal so their mattress should be safe.

Natural Sleep Remedies
There are many components that make up a good night’s sleep. While a comfortable, supportive mattress is important, there are other natural sleep remedies that can help your baby doze off. Here are some tips:
- Give your baby a massage. Gently massage your baby’s legs and feet. This can help soothe your baby, especially if he or she is a little anxious before bedtime. Mommy or Daddy’s touch is comforting and relaxing. You can also use natural baby lotion or even a bit of coconut oil. However, use the lotion or oil on a small area first to make sure that your baby is not allergic.
- Introduce soothing scents. Using soaps and lotions on your baby that have lavender, vanilla or chamomile can create a calming effect. Try a quiet, warm bath before bed.
- Less is more. The baby’s room should be free of clutter. Not only is clutter hazardous, but it creates a more stressful environment that isn’t very conducive for sleep. Try to make the space as relaxing as possible for both you and your baby.
- Keep the room cool. Try keeping the thermostat set between 65 and 70 degrees fahrenheit. Cooler temperatures promote a deeper and healthier sleep for everyone.
