Protecting your mattress is key but if you’re prone to allergies, it’s especially important to opt for a mattress allergy cover rather than your typical mattress pad.
Learn what a mattress allergy cover is, what it’s designed to do, and why you should get one ASAP!
What is a mattress allergy cover?
A mattress allergy cover is a bedding item that is a barrier between you and your mattress. Some mattress allergy covers are designed like a fitted sheet while others zip around the entire mattress (top, bottom, and sides).
Mattress allergy covers are designed to keep out…
- Dust Mites
- Bed Bugs
- Pet Dander
- Other Allergens
Do mattress allergy covers work?
Yes! It is recommended to look for a pore size that is less than 10 microns but ideally, we prefer a pore size of less than 5 microns. If the material is not tightly woven and has too large of a pore size, the cover will not effectively block allergens.
Are you allergic to your mattress?
If you suspect that you are allergic to your mattress, an allergy cover isn’t the best fix. We strongly suggest replacing your mattress, even though of course this is an investment. An allergy cover is really more for surface allergens, such as dust.
Finding the best mattress allergy cover
We recommend opting for a cover that is made of organic cotton rather than synthetic materials. Organic cotton won’t off-gas harmful toxins and won’t be treated with bleach or chemical flame retardants.
Savvy Rest offers a GOTS-certified organic mattress allergy encasement that has a pore size of 4.5 microns.
If you wish to protect your pillows as well, Savvy Rest also has GOTS-certified pillow allergy covers.
