The Differences Between Dunlop & Talalay Latex

Dominick explains the benefits of our two forms of natural latex, and how they can work together to create the perfect mattress for you.

Dominick: Savvy Rest organic mattresses are made with two types of natural latex—Dunlop and Talalay. Both are equally pure, but both have different feels and different characteristics which gives you lots of options when making your choice of mattress configuration.

Whether you choose all Dunlop or all Talalay, or a mix of the two, you’ll be pleased with the quality and the comfort. But before making your decision, let’s go over some of the differences between Dunlop and Talalay, from how they’re made to how to they feel.

Tha natural Dunlop we use in our mattresses is certified organic by GOLS—that’s Global Organic Latex Standard.  We never use any synthetic rubber, petrochemicals, or toxic memory foam.

So how it Dunlop latex manufactured? The sap from a rubber tree is whipped into a froth then poured into a mold and baked like a cake. The result is a natural foam that is incredibly comfortable, that provides fantastic support and stability, which makes it a great choice for couples trying to address motion transfer issues.

Dunlop is denser than Talalay, which is why we compare Dunlop to pound cake and Talalay to angel food cake.

A configuration such as Firm on the bottom, Medium in the middle, and Soft on the top provides just a touch of softness while still providing great support for the spine. This is a popular combination since it works for many different body types and sleeping positions.

But let’s say you’re a back or a side sleeper and you need a very firm mattress. We would probably still steer you towards Dunlop with a combination of Medium over Firm over Firm.

So to recap, natural Dunlop is the denser of the two types of latex we use and it’s available in three different firmnesses.

Alright, let’s move on to Talalay. Our natural Talalay meets the standards of the Forest Stewardship Council. It’s just as pure as our natural Dunlop, both in terms of composition and environmental impact, but the difference is in how it’s manufactured and how it feels.

The Talalay process has two extra steps—pressurization and flash freezing. The latex is vacuum-sealed inside the mold which distributes the air evenly throughout all the liquid. It is then flash-frozen before baking to prevent settling. This process creates a more open, uniform cell structure which provides better breathability.  People who sleep hot will prefer one or more layers of Talalay.

So we often recommend a top layer of Soft Talalay for side sleepers. This is because the Talalay will cradle your hip and shoulder while still providing good support for your torso.

If you’re petite and want a soft mattress overall, you can try a Soft Dunlop in the middle and a Firm Dunlop on the bottom. Don’t be afraid to mix and match.  Dunlop and Talalay work beautifully together. But don’t assume Talalay only comes in Soft. Firm and Medium layers of Talalay are very responsive and push back against the body, offering superior support.

I hope this video has given you better understanding of Dunlop and Talalay. Thank you for watching.
