Dominick explains the differences between our mattress foundation options—and why it’s so important to properly support your organic latex mattress.

Dominick: Hi, my name is Dominick, and I’m here to talk about our Savvy Rest mattress foundations versus traditional box springs. Now, we have several options for you, but first I want to explain why we don’t recommend a box spring for our mattresses.Â
Natural latex is heavy, so your all-latex mattress needs to be placed on something sturdy and rigid. The surface on which it rests must not flex. Traditional boxsprings are designed to flex, which means your latex mattress will flex with it, not giving it the support it needs. Latex also needs to breathe, so it’s important that your foundation or platform allows for adequate airflow. We recommend a foundation or platform bed with slats 2 to 3 to inches apart—this will meet the requirement of support and airflow.Â
Now let’s go through some of the options we offer starting with our natural platform beds.
The Afton is our flagship platform bed made of beautiful maple and poplar wood. The slats are very durable and are 3 inches apart. This is a perfect bad for someone who is looking for something simple and classic.
Then, we have the handsome Esmont platform bed. You can opt for either a slatted or solid headboard. No tools are required for either of these platform beds and you can choose between several zero-VOC stains.Â
Already have a bed frame? Well here are some other options.
Our platform bed insert is a very popular product that will not only meet our foundation requirements but will also give your bed some extra height if desired. Choose between a 5-, 7-, or 9-inch height. Like our platform beds, it’s hand-built in our Virginia woodshop, so you know you’re getting a carefully-crafted piece that’ll last for years.
And finally, for those who want a completely uniform look, we have our mattress foundations. The Savvy Rest mattress foundation replaces a box spring in a bedstead or frame. It’s made with untreated pine slats and enclosed in our Savvy Rets organic casing. Choose between our standard height of 9 inches or our low-profile height of 5 inches.
Now, if you have a bed with a solid wood platform, or you plan to keep your mattress on the floor for awhile, we recommend getting a bed rug. Our bed rug is a one-inch mat made of coconut fiber and natural latex. The bed rug porous and breathable, so it’ll help provide some air flow under the mattress. And, if you happen to have a wrapped coil mattress, a bed rug may be essential. If you have a platform bed with slats greater than 2 inches apart, the bed rug will act as a solid foundation and prevent the coils from bending between slats, thus meeting our warranty requirements.
I hope this video has provided you with all the answers you need, but if you still have questions, please feel free to call us. We’re always happy to help.
