Top Layer
Popular Top Layers
The top layer of latex in your mattress is the comfort layer . This is the layer that you will feel the most.
If you are a side sleeper, we typically recommend a top layer of Talalay latex since Talalay is known for excellent pressure point relief. However, if you’re looking for a firmer mattress overall, Dunlop latex may be the more appropriate choice.
Soft Talalay or Soft Dunlop top layers are best for more petite adults or someone who likes a softer feel. Medium Talalay or Medium Dunlop top layers are best for larger adults or someone who likes a Medium/Firm feel.
Middle Layer
Popular Middle Layers
The middle layer of latex is the transitional layer . While you feel the top layer the most, you will also feel your middle layer. Typically, the middle layer is either firmer or of equal density to your top layer.
Bottom Layer
Popular Bottom Layers
The bottom layer of latex is the support layer . You will not feel this layer. We typically recommend either Firm Dunlop or Firm Talalay latex for stable support.
Dunlop vs. Talalay
Dunlop
Dunlop is the denser of the two types of latex.
Softer Dunlop layers at the top of a mattress cushion gently, while medium and/or firm layers below offer as much support as desired.
People with nerve-related back pain particularly appreciate Dunlop’s consistent, stable support.
Dunlop is less expensive than Talalay because there are fewer steps in the manufacturing process.
This makes it a popular choice for multiple uses, including beds for children, guests, or for anyone who prefers to avoid a pillowy or “sinking†mattress feel.
The Dunlop latex we use is GOLS-certified.
Talalay
Talalay is a luxurious, cradling latex that is excellent at pressure point relief.
It is very responsive and has some “bounce†while still offering plenty of stable support.
Talalay is also breathable from its unique cell structure so it's perfect for anyone looking for a cooler sleep experience.
The Talalay latex we use is Cradle to Cradle GOLD certified and the latex sap is sourced from rubber tree plantations that adhere to sustainable forestry practices.
Regardless of which latex you choose in your mattress, the Serenity mattress is completely GOTS-certified organic as a finished product.
Popular Configurations
Please Note: The feel of a mattress is personal to every individual and is affected by your weight and sleep position.
This all-Dunlop configuration blends softness with sturdy support. It's a soft mattress overall without too much of a "sinking" feeling since Dunlop is denser than Talalay.
This mattress configuration is for someone who loves a softer mattress that hugs you. A top layer of Talalay is great for pressure point relief.
This configuration has stable core support while offering gentle pressure relief with two layers of Talalay latex.
This all-Talalay mattress has a soft cradling feel overall with support from the Medium and Firm layers. Talalay latex is also breathable and sleeps cool.
This combo has a hint of softness on top but firmer support with the Medium & Firm Dunlop layers. It's a bestseller and a great choice for many body types.
Luxurious Medium Talalay is responsive but not too “sinky.†Larger adults appreciate how well it transitions their weight to the denser Dunlop below.
This mattress configuration has an overall medium/firm feel. Two medium layers makes this a slightly more giving option than two firm layers.
This is the firmest configuration we recommend. It is great for those with nerve-related back pain or those who sleep on their stomach and need firm support.
This configuration offers gentle pressure point relief with a top layer of Talalay latex. The denser Dunlop layers add plenty of support.
Uncommon Configurations
These aren't our most popular configurations but they may be right for your needs.
Talalay Below Dunlop
Due to its higher cost, most customers use luxurious Talalay on top of Dunlop layers.
Three Medium Layers
Most customers use multiple densities (Soft, Medium, Firm) in their layers.
Not Recommended
The following configurations are not recommended.
Soft Bottom Layer
Bottom layers are typically Firm latex (Dunlop or Talalay). Firm Dunlop is the most common bottom layer!
Firm Top Layer
Top layers are typically Soft or Medium latex. For folks who like to "sleep on rocks" we make exceptions. :) If that's not you, we'd recommend Soft or Medium latex.
Firm Above Soft
We do not recommend Soft Talalay below a firmer layer of latex. Soft Talalay should only be used as a middle layer if you also have Soft Talalay as your top layer.
Firm Above Medium
Firmer layers are typically beneath Medium layers to feel the lighter density of the Medium layer.
Latex Exchanges
Once you receive your mattress, you have 90 days to exchange layers of latex if you feel you need to make your mattress softer or firmer.
Customers are responsible for shipping costs and paying a fee if they upgrade from Dunlop to Talalay latex.
Split vs. Solid Layers
Split layers
Split layers are available in Queen, King, and CA King mattresses.
There is no extra charge.
Instead of three solid layers, you can opt to have three half layers on one side of the mattress and three half layers on the other side.
There are two main benefits to choosing split layers:
- Latex is heavy so handling half layers of latex is easier than whole layers.
- Split layers allows for each partner to have their own configuration instead of having to settle on one. If one person wants their side to be firmer than the other, this can easily be done when you choose to have split layers.
