The post How Long Do Pillows Last? appeared first on Savvy Rest.

]]>
How long does a pillow last? This is a very common question since after a lot of use, pillows can become compressed, less supportive, and simply old.

While you definitely don’t need to go pillow shopping every 6 months, you may be surprised when it’s time to replace your pillow.

We break it down for you here.

When should I replace my pillow?

You should replace your pillow approximately every 2-3 years if you have a quality latex pillow & you have been taking care of it with a pillowcase you wash regularly and/or an allergy cover. However, if you have a pillow fill that is not as supportive, you may opt to switch it out after 1-2 years instead. When it comes to comfort, it depends on your own preferences if you can stretch out the lifetime of your pillow.

However, another factor to consider is allergens. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America recommends replacing your pillow every 2 years. Dust mites, pet dander, and dead skin cells can be found in your pillow over time so from a health and hygiene standpoint, you may want to replace your pillow sooner rather than later.

How to Dispose of Old Pillows

If your pillow is made of organic materials such as kapok, wool, or organic cotton, you may be able to compost the fill! This is an eco-friendly way of disposing of your pillow rather than simply sending it to a landfill. If you do not compost at home, there may be a compost bin or center in your area.

However, if your pillow is made of synthetic materials, such as polyester or memory foam, it is unfortunately not biodegradable.

Can I recycle my old pillow?

You cannot throw a pillow in your home recycling bin but you can contact your local recycling center to see if they accept pillows! They may ask you what material the pillow is made of. Another option is the American Textile Recycling Service. They have donation bins across the country. Visit their website to see if one is near you!

Reusing My Old Pillow

You also don’t necessarily need to discard your old pillow if you can find another way to utilize it, such as for pillow forts, a cozy reading nook, or added plushness for your dog’s pet bed.

It can also be used as an “emergency pillow” in case you have guests stay over and run out of newer pillows, or something happens to your current pillow and you need a backup (of course this depends on the condition of your pillow). It’s always good to have at least 2-3 pillows in your closet for those unexpected moments.

Can you donate pillows?

Most homeless shelters, women’s shelters, and other charities prefer new pillows for hygienic reasons and for the safety of their residents. Sometimes animal shelters will accept used pillows for makeshift bedding depending on the animal shelter’s current needs (each shelter typically has their own wishlist). You can call local shelters to see if they accept gently used pillows.

Please Note: Pillows with stains, smells, or extensive use should NOT be donated.

Shopping for Pillows

If you are ready to replace your pillows, we recommend purchasing an organic pillow made of durable materials that will allow you to use your pillow longer. Natural latex pillows (either Dunlop or Talalay latex) can easily keep their shape for longer when compared to a fluffy down pillow, which typically needs to be replaced much more frequently.

What is the Best Mattress Size? A Mattress Size Guide https://savvyrest.com/blog/what-is-the-best-mattress-size-a-mattress-size-guide/ Wed, 07 Feb 2024 16:14:16 +0000 https://savvyrest.com/?p=118857 The mattress size guide you need when mattress shopping.

The post What is the Best Mattress Size? A Mattress Size Guide appeared first on Savvy Rest.

]]>
You are ready to purchase a new mattress but aren’t sure which size is best for your bedroom.

Mattress sizes can sometimes be tricky since you want to confirm it fits your space without the room feeling cramped, but you also want to make sure you have enough space to sleep comfortably, especially if you have a partner who will be sharing the bed with you.

This blog post will cover US mattress sizes, along with detailing which sizes are most popular and why.

When Choosing your Best Mattress Size, Ask Yourself…

3 questions to ask when choosing a mattress size.

1. What is my budget?

This matters, since a Queen may be a more affordable option rather than a King. Know what you are comfortable spending, or if you want to opt for the King, see if financing options are available.

2. What is the size of the room?

The worst thing is purchasing a mattress that takes up your entire bedroom so you have no space for anything else, or worse, doesn’t even fit in your bedroom. Make sure you know the dimensions of your bedroom and the wall it will be up against. Ask yourself: Do I also need room for a dresser? Will I have space for a side table? Learn more about designing your bedroom.

3. Will this mattress be comfortable for both me and my partner?

Obviously, this doesn’t apply to you if you’re single, but if you have a partner, their comfort matters too! If you have a very tall partner for example, they probably aren’t going to feel comfortable in a Full mattress size.

Mattress Size Guide

Before diving into specific information on each individual mattress size, here is an overall guide to what is available when mattress shopping.

Please note that sizing can vary slightly depending on brand, but generally speaking, these dimensions are standard across the industry. Mattress sizes in inches.

Twin: 38” x 74”

Twin XL: 38” x 80”

Full: 53” x 74”

Queen: 60” x 80”

King: 76” x 80”

CA King: 72” x 84”

Alaskan King: 108” x 108” (not available at every store)

Mattress Size Chart for popular size mattresses.

Breaking it Down: Mattress Dimensions

Twin

Twin Mattress Dimensions: 38” x 74”

Best For: Small children or teens

Known As: The smallest mattress size in the US (other than crib size mattress). Meant for one person.

Recommended Room Size: 8 x 10 feet (this will also allow for small furniture pieces), though 7 x 9 feet is also acceptable.

Twin XL

Twin XL Mattress Dimensions: 38” x 80”

Best For: Teens or small adults

Known As: A smaller mattress that is still comfortable for taller children or adults due to its extended length. A Twin XL mattress size is also very common in college dorms. Meant for one person.

Recommended Room Size: 8 x 10 feet

Full

Full Mattress Dimensions: 53” x 74”

Best For: Teenager, single adult, couples who like sleeping close, or guest bed

Known As: A smaller mattress that is large enough for two people. If you like cuddling with your partner and don’t need your own space, this is a good option. It is also a more economical choice compared to a Queen or King size mattress.

Recommended Room Size: 10 x 10 feet

Queen

Queen Mattress Dimensions: 60” x 80”

Best For: Single adult, couples, or guest bed

Known As: A Queen size mattress is the most popular size in the US. It has plenty of space for one adult, and can comfortably sleep a couple as well. It is more affordable than King and CA King mattresses, but is still more spacious when compared to Full mattresses.

Recommended Room Size: 10 x 10 feet at minimum, but ideally larger so you can fit more furniture.

King

King Mattress Dimensions: 76” x 80”

Best For: Couples or those who co-sleep with their child.

Known As: A popular option for couples who like their space, especially those who sleep hot and want to avoid too much body heat from cuddling. If you co-sleep with your child, a King size will allow for more room than a Queen or even a CA King.

Recommended Room Size: 12 x 10 feet

CA King

CA King Mattress Dimensions: 72” x 84”

Best For: A tall single adult or couples where one or both individuals are tall.

Known As: The mattress that 6’5” adults prefer since it offers more length than even a King mattress. No one wants their feet hanging off the end of the bed! The one downside is that this mattress is four inches less in width when compared to the King mattress size.

Recommended Room Size: 12 x 12 feet

Alaskan King

Alaskan King Dimensions: 108” x 108”

Best For: A very large bedroom that needs a larger mattress, a couple who likes a ton of space, or a couple who co-sleeps with multiple children or pets.

Known As: The mattress you buy when you want an ocean apart between you and your partner! All jokes aside, this is not a common mattress due to the fact that it doesn’t fit into most bedrooms, or isn’t necessary for the average couple’s comfort. However, it can be helpful to those with several pets who take over the bed, or if you are a parent who co-sleeps with more than two children.

Recommended Room Size: 16 x 16 feet

Note: This size is not carried by most mattress brands. However, it may be available through a custom order.

Which Mattress Size is Best For You?

Besides the three questions we posed at the beginning of the article (make sure you read those!), what else is there to consider when choosing mattress size?

Are you a hot sleeper?

If yes, and you are sharing the bed with a partner, we recommend staying away from Full size, and possibly even Queen. You will want your space, so King size may be your best option. Learn more about sleeping hot and what to do about it. You may also consider sleeping in separate beds.

Do you have restless leg syndrome?

If you or your partner toss and turn (or kick), you again will want to make sure you have plenty of space, so a King size bed could be the safest bet.

What is your most common sleep position?

Do you curl up into a ball on your side? Then you don’t need a lot of space to spread out. But if you tend to stretch out your arms and roll over, you may want to consider one of the larger sizes.

Do you share a bed with children or pets?

If you co-sleep with your children, or you have furry family members, you will want to keep that in mind when choosing a mattress. Ample space is important to avoid feeling over-crowded, especially if you have larger dogs who can easily take over!

Do you need a custom mattress?

Custom mattress sizes are fantastic for those who need a specific size to fit an RV, small loft bed, or larger space that can accommodate a mattress much grander than a King. Whatever your situation, a custom mattress may be the best route for you but keep in mind, it comes with custom fees.

Start Shopping for Your Mattress

It’s time to start shopping. We recommend choosing an organic latex mattress that is customizable in terms of firmness. Our most popular mattress is The Serenity, which is made of 3 layers of natural latex and is GOTS-certified organic as a finished product.

Blankets are a must-have in every home but it’s important to get the correct size!

Whether you’re looking for the right throw blanket size for cuddling up while reading on the sofa, or a larger blanket to have in your bedroom on cold nights, here are some helpful blanket sizes that you can refer back to when shopping.

Popular blanket dimensions covering Crib - Throw blanket sizes.
General measurements for bedroom blankets (Twin - CA King size).

Blanket Size Chart

*Please note these measurements are approximate and do not match every manufacturer’s sizing.

CRIB: 45″ x 60”

SMALL THROW: 30” x 40”

STANDARD THROW: 50” x 60”

QUEEN THROW: 60” x 80”

KING THROW: 72” x 80”

TWIN: 65” x 90”

TWIN XL: 66” x 95”

FULL/DOUBLE: 85” x 90”

QUEEN: 90” x 90” on the smaller side, 90” x 100” on the larger side

KING: 108” x 90” on the smaller side, 108” x 100” on the larger side

CA KING: 108” x 92”

Which blanket size is right for me?

CRIB: As the name suggests, a crib blanket can be kept in a crib for a cozy feel, an extra layer between baby and the changing station, or in some cases, as a swaddle. Please always follow safety guidelines based on the age of your child. The American Academy of Pediatrics states that parents should “keep loose blankets, pillows, stuffed toys, bumpers, and other soft items out of the sleep space” of infants. Click here for more information on safe sleep practices for young children according to the AAP.

THROW: There are various sizes for throw blankets which can be overwhelming but this also means that what you need is definitely out there. If you simply want something decorative to drape over furniture or have on your lap, opt for a small throw blanket. If you want something to wrap around you completely, the 50” x 60” may be the more appropriate size. If you plan on using this blanket as a decorative element on a bed for a pop of color or a cozy vibe, then we recommend a larger size such as 60” x 80” to really make a statement.

TWIN & TWIN XL: If you have a Twin or Twin XL mattress, you should opt for a blanket that is designed specifically for that bed size if you wish to use it as an actual layer in your bedding. Keep in mind that a Twin or Twin XL bed is meant for one person to sleep in so the blanket will also be meant for one person. If you want something more oversized, a Full blanket would be the next size up.

FULL/DOUBLE: A Full size blanket (also known as a Double) is meant for a Full size bed. Full size beds can comfortably sleep one person, though some couples don’t mind and in fact prefer sleeping in a Full rather than a larger Queen or King. If you wish for the blanket to cover the entire bed, opt for the Full. If you simply want a blanket to drape on top of the bed as a decorative piece, a Standard Throw or Queen Throw will do the trick!

QUEEN: A Queen size blanket is designed for a Queen bed, which is the most popular mattress size in the industry. A Queen mattress offers plenty of room for one person but also very comfortably sleeps two. It’s also excellent for those with smaller primary bedrooms that cannot accommodate a King. Don’t want the blanket to be part of the bedding but simply looking to drape it over the top instead? Go for a Queen Throw.

KING: This size is very popular for couples because it allows for plenty of space, even with a dog or two! If you want to use the blanket in your layers of bedding, get a King, but if you want a throw, look for a King Throw.

CA KING: The major difference between King and CA King is that the CA King is longer (typically around 4”) but less wide. It’s very accommodating for taller individuals who dread when their feet go over the bottom of the bed. Don’t worry–they make blankets specifically for CA King beds so you don’t have to settle for a traditional King. A CA King will typically be about 108” x 92”. You can also opt for a blanket that is made for King & CA King so that it will be wide enough for a King but long enough for a CA King, giving a slightly oversized (and extra cozy) feel.

What is the best blanket material?

We personally love organic cotton blankets. Synthetic materials can lack breathability and even conventional cotton can be treated with harsh dyes, bleach, and other harmful chemicals. Blankets come in direct contact with your skin, your largest organ. Organic cotton is a fantastic option for those with sensitive skin, or for anyone wanting cleaner materials in their home.

Worried about the price? There are plenty of organic cotton blankets on the market that are comparable in price to other “luxury” blankets made of synthetic materials so when you can, choose eco-friendly cotton.

Another excellent material for blankets and duvets is wool. Wool natural regulates temperature so that you don’t feel overheated. It can be used all year round, making it a worthy investment. We recommend opting for wool that is certified organic and not treated with harsh chemicals or dyes.

Quick Questions

What is the best throw blanket size?

This depends on what your goal is. If you want a smaller throw blanket to simply drape on a chair or loveseat, 30 “ x 40” is considered a “lap blanket” and is fine for that purpose. If you are looking for a blanket you can actually cuddle up with, 42” x 42” or 50” x 60” are more appropriate sizes.

What is a twin blanket size?

A twin blanket is for a Twin size bed and should measure approximately 65-70” x 90”.

What is a full blanket size?

A full blanket is for a Full or Double bed and should measure approximately 85-90” x 90”.

How big is a Queen size blanket?

A Queen blanket is typically 90” x 90”.

How big is a King size blanket?

A King blanket is typically 108” x 90”.

Can I use an electric blanket with a latex mattress?

No, you should never use an electric blanket with a latex mattress. The heat from the blanket will harm the integrity of the latex, causing early oxidation and in most cases, voiding your warranty. Your mattress is an investment so it’s important to take care of it! Stay away from electric blankets and heating pads while in your latex mattress.

Can I machine wash a blanket?

In most cases, cotton blankets can be machine washed. Always read the label or if unsure, contact the manufacturer. If you have a wool blanket, it should not be machine washed. You may opt for a green dry cleaner.

Can I put a blanket in the dryer?

We recommend tumble drying on low heat for cotton blankets. However, wool should never go in the dryer.

Looking for the best mattress protector, or maybe just trying to figure out if you even need one to begin with? You’ve come to the right place.

What is a mattress protector? How do you choose one? And how do you clean a mattress protector?

So many questions but don’t worry–we have the answers. Keep reading to learn all about mattress protectors!

What is a mattress protector?

A mattress protector is a barrier between you and your mattress that helps protect it from spills, stains, odors, sweat, dirt and dust. Typically it is placed over your mattress similarly to a fitted sheet so that it sits snug over your mattress.

Mattress protectors are available in different sizes, materials, and price points.

What is a mattress allergy encasement?

A mattress allergy encasement zips around the entire mattress, whereas a mattress pad only goes over the top of the mattress and a standard mattress protector goes over the top and sides. If you want the entire mattress to be encased, and you are concerned with dust mites, bed bugs, and allergens, then this zippered mattress protector may be the best choice.

Is a mattress pad and a mattress protector the same thing?

No, a mattress pad is different from a mattress protector. A mattress protector is simply meant to protect your mattress, whereas a mattress pad also has a comfort element and adds an extra layer between you and your mattress. Depending on the pad, it can have some loft and offer more cushioning.

If your number one priority is protecting your mattress, we recommend a mattress protector.
If you are looking for a bit of softness but don’t necessarily have the budget for an actual mattress topper, a wool mattress pad may be worth exploring.

Do I need a mattress protector?

In order to keep your mattress clean and protected, you need either a mattress protector, a mattress pad, or a mattress allergy encasement. We never recommend only putting a fitted sheet on a mattress and calling it a day. That is not enough protection for your mattress, which was most likely quite an investment!

Organic mattress protector, made with organic cotton.

What are the benefits of using a mattress protector?

Here is what a mattress protector will shield your mattress from…

 • Spills & accidents
 • Dust
 • Skin Cells
 • Sweat stains
 • Pet Dander

More benefits:

 • Keeps your mattress cleaner for longer
 • Easy to wash and super low-maintenance
 • Maintain your mattress warranty
 • A mattress protector is more affordable than ruining your mattress and having to buy a new one!

Should I get a waterproof mattress protector?

We recommend a waterproof protector for the most defense. However, some waterproof protectors can be made entirely of synthetic materials that are treated with harsh chemicals. We recommend opting for an organic waterproof mattress protector as a more natural option that still fully protects your mattress.

How do you wash a mattress protector?

Typically, you should wash a mattress protector in your washing machine. Always read the instructions since each protector is different. Some protectors may require that you lay them flat to dry, while others can go in the dryer on low heat.

How often should you wash a mattress protector?

We recommend every 1-2 months. Always wash your protector immediately if there has been an accident!

Do you put sheets over a mattress protector?

Yes! Your fitted sheet should go right over your mattress protector.

What sizes are available?

Whether you need a king mattress protector for your bed, a twin mattress protector for your child, or a crib mattress protector for your newborn, mattress protectors are available in all traditional bed sizes.

Plenty of people use an adjustable base to experience the health benefits of elevated sleeping. While using a wedge pillow is certainly a step in the right direction and can absolutely help alleviate certain sleep-related issues, some need the extra elevation that only an adjustable bed can offer.

But not all adjustable bases are the most aesthetically pleasing. If you want to learn about the potential health benefits of using an adjustable bed and want a sustainable bed frame that is beautiful to look at, we have just what you need. Keep reading!

What does an Adjustable Bed do?

An adjustable bed elevates your head and/or legs & feet while you sleep. It allows you to control the incline you are on and, if you have two separate units, allows your partner to control their own side of the bed.

Benefits of Sleeping in an Elevated Position

There are several potential health benefits from sleeping in an inclined bed, such as…

 • Minimize snoring
 • Help alleviate acid reflux & GERD symptoms
 • Lessen back pain
 • Offer pressure point relief
 • Lessen sleep apnea symptoms
 • Decrease swelling
 • Help prevent post-nasal drip & congestion
 • Improve blood circulation
 • Decrease mouth breathing
 • Improve digestion

Can any bed go on an Adjustable Bed Frame?

No, innerspring mattresses should not go on an adjustable bed frame. We recommend a latex mattress.

Sustainable wooden bed frame with adjustable base.

9 Benefits of a Good Body Pillow https://savvyrest.com/blog/9-benefits-good-body-pillow/ Tue, 17 May 2022 05:00:00 +0000 https://savvyrest.com.local/9-benefits-of-a-good-body-pillow/ The best pillow for side sleepers.

The post 9 Benefits of a Good Body Pillow appeared first on Savvy Rest.

]]>
Are body pillows good for you? Absolutely! There is a long list of body pillow benefits.

Body pillows are the best pillows for side sleepers because of the unparalleled support and pressure relief they offer.

Here are a few reasons why you should add an organic body pillow to your bedroom.

Benefits of a Body Pillow

1. Proper Body Support for Side Sleepers

Body pillows are a must-have pillow for side sleepers because they offer proper support. While sleeping on your side, you can hug one body pillow in front of you while adding a second body pillow behind you for even more enveloping comfort and support.

2. Pressure Relief on the Lower Back, Hips, & Spine

Place the long body pillow next to you vertically as you lay on your side. Hug the top of the body pillow while the lower part of the body pillow is between your knees. This will allow for pressure point relief as it keeps your spine aligned (another item on our list!).

Body pillow for spinal alignment.

3. Improved Shoulder, Hip, & Spinal Alignment

One of the main reasons why people use a body pillow is to keep their spine aligned. When your spine is out of alignment, this can lead to back pain. While there are different shapes and options when looking for a spinal alignment pillow, we highly recommend considering a body pillow since it is multi-functional when looking at overall benefits.

4. Relaxation of the Muscles Along the Spine

Your body naturally relaxes when using a body pillow, leading to an incredibly comfortable sleep.

5. Prevent Tossing & Turning

Body pillows help prevent tossing and turning, which is a lot of times due to hip pain from lack of pressure point relief. Body pillows are definitely considered a pressure relieving pillow and can absolutely help alleviate this problem.

6. Improved Weight Distribution & Blood Circulation

When sleeping on your side, most of your weight is held by your hip and shoulder. However, adding a body pillow to your sleep routine allows for that weight to be more evenly distributed. Also, using a pillow between your legs slightly elevates them, which encourages blood flow.

7. Lessen Snoring

Body pillows are known to help lessen snoring through extra elevation and encouraging you to sleep on your side.

If you can’t stand the thought of sleeping on your side but want a pillow that can address snoring, we recommend a latex wedge pillow.

Body pillow for pregnancy, pressure point relief, & more.

8. Versatile Sleep Aid for Injury Recovery

A body pillow can be very helpful when recovering from a leg, hip, or back injury because of its pressure-relieving qualities, added elevation, and its ability to keep you sleeping throughout the night without tossing and turning.

9. Additional Support During Pregnancy

While not officially labeled as a pregnancy pillow, a full body pillow can absolutely be used for extra support during pregnancy! Growing mamas will seriously appreciate the comfort they feel from a body pillow. There are several pregnancy pillow benefits that mirror the same benefits as any side sleeper using a body pillow (pressure point relief, less tossing and turning, improved blood circulation, etc). It’s especially important to sleep on your side during pregnancy, which the body pillow is designed for!

If you’re searching for the benefits of an organic pregnancy pillow, we encourage you to consider a Savvy Rest body pillow. See all the options below!

Why Choose a Latex Mattress Topper? https://savvyrest.com/blog/why-choose-latex-mattress-topper/ Fri, 04 Mar 2022 05:00:00 +0000 https://savvyrest.com.local/why-choose-a-latex-mattress-topper/ An extra layer of comfort.

The post Why Choose a Latex Mattress Topper? appeared first on Savvy Rest.

]]>
There are several different types of mattress toppers available. It can be challenging to figure out which material to choose and what overall feel will work best for your specific needs.

This blog post will review common mattress topper materials and the overall benefits of one our favorite options: natural latex.

Mattress Topper Materials

Here are some common materials used as the support layer in a mattress topper.

 • Natural Latex
 • Memory Foam
 • Polyurethane Foam
 • Wool
 • Feather
 • Alpaca fiber
 • Polyester blends

Regardless of which inner material you choose for your mattress topper, we strongly recommend opting for a topper that is covered in certified organic cotton. Organic cotton is free of pesticides, bleach, and other harmful chemicals. It is more healthy and environmentally-friendly when compared to some synthetic fabrics.

Talalay latex mattress topper

Why Choose a Latex Mattress Topper?

There are several benefits to choosing a natural latex mattress topper, especially in comparison to a polyurethane foam or memory foam mattress topper.

 • Breathable: Natural latex does not retain body heat. The open cell structure of natural latex makes it a comfortable and cool sleep; it’s a fantastic choice for those who tend to “sleep hot.” If you struggle with feeling overheated but want a second option, a wool topper is also surprisingly breathable.
 • Durable: Natural latex is incredibly durable. This again goes back to the fact that it does not retain body heat. The chemical reaction between your body heat and synthetic foam allows for the foam to mold with the curves of your body, achieving excellent pressure point relief. Over time though, the synthetic foam has a difficult time bouncing back, which leads to dips and sags in the mattress. Natural latex is able to achieve pressure point relief but still bounces back and keeps its structure and shape.
 • Eco-Friendly: Natural latex comes from sap harvested from rubber trees. This sap is then baked into the cozy layers found in mattresses and toppers. Quality natural latex will have certifications. Look for Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) or Cradle to Cradle GOLD. These certifying bodies analyze the purity of the material as well as the overall manufacturing process.
 • Supportive: Natural latex has the stability you need while also offering pressure point relief and luxurious softness. However, you can also choose a medium or firm topper if desired. There is no rule that your topper must be soft. However, if you have a soft mattress, we do not recommend putting a firm topper over it.
 • More Affordable: If your mattress is too firm but you don’t want to completely replace it, adding a topper will give you that hint of softness at a fraction of the cost.

Customization Options

When you choose a latex bed topper, you also have the advantage of customization.

There are two types of natural latex: Dunlop and Talalay.

Dunlop latex is the denser of the two and offers exceptional support.

A Talalay latex mattress topper is known for its incredible pressure point relief, breathability, and hint of softness (though it is available in firmer densities as well).

Once you decide on which latex you prefer, some toppers will also give you a choice of overall density (Soft, Medium, or Firm).

What is a Split Mattress? https://savvyrest.com/blog/what-split-mattress/ Wed, 24 Nov 2021 05:00:00 +0000 https://savvyrest.com.local/what-is-a-split-mattress/ Ideal for adjustable bed frames.

Considering an adjustable bed? That means you need a mattress designed for an adjustable frame. A traditional mattress won’t allow for you to move independently on your side of the bed, so you need something with separation.

Learn what your options are and which mattress we recommend!

What is a split mattress?

A split mattress has separation (whether only on top, only on the bottom, or throughout the entire mattress), while a regular mattress is totally connected.

Let’s say you just found the best split king adjustable bed and you need a mattress. You can purchase two Twin XL mattresses and place those on the frame, allowing you total control over your side of the bed. Or, you can choose a King split top mattress which allows for separation at the top. You still have the freedom to prop yourself up without your partner being affected, but you also don’t need a second mattress.

Is there a difference between split head & split mattresses?

A split head mattress is the same as a split top mattress in the sense that there is a split that starts from the top of the mattress and ends about halfway down.

However, an actual split mattress is two separate mattresses, such as putting two Twin XL mattresses in a King bed frame. The mattresses are independent from one another but are placed in the same frame.

Who is a split mattress for?

A split mattress is for anyone who has an adjustable frame.

Adjustable beds have incredible benefits. They allow you to better control your sleep position, angle, and elevation, which can then improve circulation, aid in pressure point relief, ease back discomfort, decrease digestive issues, alleviate swelling, minimize snoring, and more.

What size split top mattress should I get?

You’ve decided that you want one mattress with just a split in the top half (a split top mattress). However, you’re stuck on the size.

Well, that’s a personal preference! Adjustable frames typically only come in Queen, King, and CA King. If you like being super cozy, opt for the Queen frame & mattress. But if you want more space, a King is the most popular choice.

Which split top mattress should I buy?

We always recommend a split top latex mattress that is made of organic and natural materials to avoid breathing in harmful chemicals.

Savvy Rest offers a split top mattress that includes a 32” split from the top. It is also completely customizable so your firmness can differ from your partner’s side of the bed.

Happy shopping!

Do Dogs Need Dog Beds? https://savvyrest.com/blog/do-dogs-need-dog-beds/ Fri, 17 Sep 2021 05:00:00 +0000 https://savvyrest.com.local/do-dogs-need-dog-beds/ For your furry best friend.

Dogs spend an average of 12-14 hours a day sleeping. That’s a lot of rest!

So, what should a dog sleep on? While your bed is always an option, some dog owners want to keep their sleeping space separate from their furry best friend.

Learn why a dog bed is important and what you should consider when purchasing one.

Are dog beds necessary?

Yes! At least we certainly think they are. While a dog can sleep in your bed, this can disrupt your sleep, affect intimacy with your partner, and can cause your sheets to be covered in dog hair, drool, dirt, and anything else your dog is introducing.

A dog bed is cozy and supportive. It’s much better at pressure point relief than the hardwood floor, and it will help deter your pet from taking over the sofa or armchair.

When should you get a dog bed?

A dog bed should be one of the first things you purchase when getting a dog but it’s never too late to buy one!

What size dog bed does your dog need?

This depends on the size of your dog.

Typically the pet bed product page will show the dimensions of the bed so you can visualize the size and/or will recommend a size based on your dog’s weight or breed.

It also depends on whether they like to curl up or spread out. For example, you may have a smaller dog that could easily fit on a small pet bed but if your dog likes to stretch out in their bed and bring all their toys with them, you’ll want to size up.

Know the size of the pet bed, the size of your dog, and how they tend to sleep or relax. That will help you determine which size is best!

Can a dog bed be too big?

Not really! It’s much better to have a dog bed that’s a little too big than one that is too small. This is because a pet bed that is too small won’t accommodate your dog’s weight or support their body as they sleep. This can cause muscle and joint discomfort.

You want your dog’s bed to be a comfy place where they feel well-rested in the morning so make sure the bed isn’t too small!

Do dogs need a bed in their crate?

You could technically use some fluffy blankets but a dog bed is a great addition to your dog’s crate. It will certainly make the crate a more comfortable space.

Do dogs prefer a soft or hard bed?

You know your dog best! It shouldn’t be too soft or too firm though. You want it to be firm enough so that it offers support, but soft enough where it has a little give.

Which dog bed is best?

We strongly recommend the Savvy Doggy pet bed. This is an organic dog bed made of natural latex and includes an organic cotton cover that can be removed and washed.

We don’t recommend polyurethane or memory foam mattresses for humans so we don’t recommend them for dogs either!

This dog bed comes in three sizes: Soft, Medium, and Large. Dimensions are available on the product page.

This bed also comes in your choice of either formed or shredded latex. If your dog likes something solid and stationary, the formed latex may be the better choice. If your dog likes to curl up and nestle themselves into the bed, then the shredded latex may be best since the dog can sink into it more than the formed bed.

If your dog needs extra support, check out the Savvy Doggy Extra Support pet bed!

We also recommend adding a waterproof liner to your pet bed since accidents happen!

Should a dog bed be placed on the floor?

You can simply place your dog bed on the floor in whatever room your dog likes to sleep or relax.

However, if you want a raised dog bed, you can get a Savvy Doggy platform bed!

This platform bed is a fantastic addition to the Savvy Doggy pet bed because it is built specifically for this dog bed.

This platform bed is made using sustainably-sourced maple and poplar wood, along with zero-VOC finishes. You can also opt for a custom engraving on the bed if you want to get really fancy! There is no additional charge for the engraving.

So, are dog beds worth it?

Yes, a dog bed is a worthy purchase. Your dog will appreciate that they have their own comfortable space that improves the overall quality of their life.

What is an Adjustable Pillow? https://savvyrest.com/blog/what-adjustable-pillow/ Wed, 28 Oct 2020 05:00:00 +0000 https://savvyrest.com.local/what-is-an-adjustable-pillow/ A pillow made for you.

An adjustable pillow is an option that will give you lots of flexibility and control in the overall feel of your pillow.

But what is an adjustable pillow? And do they come in different pillow fills?

Learn why we love adjustable pillows (and why you will too).

What is an Adjustable Pillow?

An adjustable pillow is one you can unzip and remove as much fill as you’d like. You can keep the pillow full, take out half the fill, or take out the majority if you love a flat pillow.

An adjustable pillow gives you control of the height and overall feel of your pillow unlike other pillows that are simply sewn shut.

Organic wool pillow fill.

Types of Fill

There are several types of pillow fills to choose from but we recommend organic and natural fills only. Avoid polyurethane or memory foam pillows that off-gas harmful chemicals.

Our Pillow Recommendations

 • Organic Kapok: Plant-based alternative to down. Best for those who like a soft, fluffy pillow.
 • Shredded Natural Latex: Flexible pillow that conforms to the neck and shoulders. Best for those who like moveable support and a medium firmness.
 • Organic Wool: Great for those who sleep hot and like a medium-firm feel.
 • Organic Wool & Latex Blend: Best of both worlds. The wool helps you keep cool and the latex adds a hint of softness. This blend has a medium-firm feel overall.

Sleeping Positions

Adjustable pillows are appropriate for all sleep positions, whether you sleep on your back, side, or stomach.

If you sleep on your back, you will most likely prefer to keep most of the pillow fill in. If you sleep on your side, you may wish to take half out. And if you sleep on your stomach, you will need a flat pillow so we recommend removing most of the pillow fill.

Extra Pillow Fill

Don’t throw away your extra pillow fill! Store it in an airtight bag. Natural fibers compress over time so you may eventually wish to add more fill back into your pillow.

If you would prefer, you may use the extra fill for a throw pillow. Depending on how much fill you have left, you may even have enough for a second head pillow.

Adjustable Body Pillows

Don’t forget about body pillows! Adjustable body pillows are great for side sleepers since they will keep your spine aligned and help with pressure point relief.
